Names!

When Catseye first came to the mansion Catseye did not like human names because human names confused Catseye because they did not mean anything so Catseye named people what they look like or what they do but now Catseye understands that naming people after what they look like or do is like telling them that they are a thing and that it is mean and Catseye does not want to be mean to people at the BigHouse or Catseye's other friends in the BusyTown so Catseye is going to ask what people want Catseye to call them if they like to be called by their real names to be nice or if they like their special name Catseye gave them.

Also Catseye learned that peoples names are veryveryspecial to people sometimes because of the people who named them what they are named but Catseye does not know why people have their names and Catseye wants to understand if people want to tell Catseye why they have their special names Catseye would like to read, nyah!

We are talking about this in the hospital - I do not mind you calling me SharpSkinGirl, although it is not so true right now!

My name is coming from Dr. Marcel, who was at the camp in Bosnia. He was working at the Red Cross camp where I was born. My mother did not really want me because of the war and how she was getting pregnant, so she told Dr. Marcel he could give me a name. He called me "Yvette", after a girl he is knowing in medical school.

And that is why an Albanian girl is having the French name. :)

[identity profile] x-squirrel.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Doreen means "Gift." I just looked it up. But Mom named me after her Mom, so I guess you could say I'm named for my Grandma, she died before I was born though so I don't really know her. It also says the name is Irish, which makes sense, I guess. I mean, my Grandparents were Irish and my mom also has an Irish name.

Monkey Joe named himself. Well, he says him mom named him Monkey. He just thought Joe sounded cool so he added it on later.

A lot of people at my old school used to call me things like "Rodent" or "Vermin." So I don't like those words so much anymore, especially as names.

I don't mind when you call me SquirrelGirl though. Because I kind of am. And you're not mean about it at all.

[identity profile] x-diamondlil.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my parents got Lillian from a great aunt or other distant relative I never met. It's too formal sounding to me which is why I prefer Lil. You can keep calling me DiamondLil though.

[identity profile] x-catseye.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Yvette like her name?

[identity profile] x-catseye.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Catseye will not call SquirrelGirl rodent or vermin! Not even NotVermin!

So SquirrelGirl is a present?

[identity profile] x-catseye.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So DiamondLil likes her nickname better than the name her parentpeople gave her, just like how BurningGirl likes Angel better than Angelica?

[identity profile] x-squirrel.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for not calling me either of those. It means a lot to me.

And yeah, I guess I am. I mean, I know my Mom thinks so. Dad called me Dori a lot.

Oh, and now my little brother likes to call me Fuzz Butt.

[identity profile] x-diamondlil.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
My parents called me Lil and saved Lillian for when I was in trouble. Lil's less flowery. Diamond Lil was a nickname/team name given to be back in the Flight Program.

[identity profile] x-cloudy.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Jane because I guess the cops name anyone they don't know the name for Jane. (Or John. But I like Jane better, so thank goodness I'm a girl!) :D

[identity profile] x-penance.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I do. Dr. Marcel is a very kind man and I am happy to have a name that is being important to him. It is like when someone is giving you the important gift, yes?

[identity profile] x-catseye.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Catseye understands! Catseye likes that verymuch.

[identity profile] x-catseye.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Dori is a fishy! Catseye cannot call SquirrelGirl Dori.

[identity profile] x-catseye.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But the nickname is special like the othername?

[identity profile] x-catseye.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
When Catseye came to the school she got named Sharon, not Jane. Catseye does not understand. Does Jane not have a name the parentpeople gave her the way that Catseye is Gabrielle Elisabeth Smith but the school called her Sharon?

[identity profile] x-squirrel.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to call me Dori. Just some people do. Julian does a lot. But I answer to Doreen, too.

I really don't mind what people call me, as long as they're not being mean about it.

[identity profile] x-forge.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha, I remember this one because I had to help you fill out your papers, remember? The old lady who'd been taking care of you, you called her the CatLady? Her name was Sharon. It was on some papers they found there when Animal Control picked you up, and so that's what got used when we had to put together human-type identification for you. "Smith" got picked as a random last name before we knew it was actually your real one.

[identity profile] x-diamondlil.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's special like the other name.

[identity profile] x-nothungry.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Frederick was my Mom's maiden name. Jacobi was the name of her brother who died before I was born. I really kinda like both. But if 'RoundBoy' work better for you, it's fine. I'm okay either way.

[identity profile] x-scorpion.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, my adopted parents gave me a name different than what my science project mom gave me.

Carmilla Maxine. And apparently Carmilla doesn't mean Caramel. Huh. Always wanted to say I was named after a candy. Not sure what Maxine means, but hey.

I call myself Cammie, I like the way it sounds better and it stops people from calling me Camilla by accident. On occasions I've had to sound tough I sometimes called myself Scorpion - which is a long story.

Then I have the name my bio-mom gave me, which I don't think I'll ever use.

[identity profile] x-wildchild.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
And I finally get off the phone with my mom, who was like "why do you need to know why we named you Kyle, are you changing your name? You're not picking one of those mutant names we heard about on TV, are you?" and then I had to explain that I'm totally not changing my name because dude, I like my name.

and then I called my grandmom who just told me that my mom picked it out of a book of baby names and she liked it. But my middle name is my dad's name, which is kinda cool, since he's really my stepdad, even if he's the only dad I've known about.

In magic, names are important. Magic users hardly ever use their 'real' names, because names are power to other magic users. It's the reason why, with people I care about, I tend to slide into nicknames; the part of me that's a magic user is trying to 'protect' them by using a name that isn't theirs. Not that there's actually danger - it's pretty much a magic user thing, but it's the way I was brought up. So I'm a bit like a cat that way - I tend to use my own name for people instead of their own, except if they ask me otherwise.

My name isn't the name I was given when I was born - my birth name was Gemile Szardos, but I got taken away from my family and that name got used against me by the man who had me: whenever he wanted to control me magically, he'd use my real name. Otherwise he'd call me "Blossom". Ugh.

When I got taken away from him and left at the hospital, I was given the name "Amanda Sefton" by Romany and that was the name I kept growing up. Even after finding my birth family again, I kept using Amanda, since that was the name I was used to. When my mother disowned me, I changed my name legally to Amanda Sefton - it's who I am, and who I'll always be.

[identity profile] x-forge.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Just please tell me "Gemile" doesn't rhyme with "Emily" because otherwise I think you get to wear the Silly Name Hat for the day.
xp_daytripper: (hopeful)

[personal profile] xp_daytripper 2009-06-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not quite, but I'm happy to wear the hat any way. My little sister got it worse - she wound up with Jimiane. "Jimi" for short. ;)

[identity profile] x-forge.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think "Medusalith" comes close, as HRH's given name tends to make me think of weird stone formations. Crystal got off lucky compared to everyone else in the Attilani royal family.

Although that's an interesting theory you have about the importance of names. Reminds me of the conversation I had with Scott about X-Men and the reason people use code names in uniform.

Well, people who aren't me.

[identity profile] x-rictor.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I am named for my great-uncle Julio, who was named after my great-grandfather, Heinrich Julius.

Yes, my great-grandfather was German. That would be why the Mexican kid has a German last name.
