When Catseye first came to the mansion Catseye did not like human names because human names confused Catseye because they did not mean anything so Catseye named people what they look like or what they do but now Catseye understands that naming people after what they look like or do is like telling them that they are a thing and that it is mean and Catseye does not want to be mean to people at the BigHouse or Catseye's other friends in the BusyTown so Catseye is going to ask what people want Catseye to call them if they like to be called by their real names to be nice or if they like their special name Catseye gave them.

Also Catseye learned that peoples names are veryveryspecial to people sometimes because of the people who named them what they are named but Catseye does not know why people have their names and Catseye wants to understand if people want to tell Catseye why they have their special names Catseye would like to read, nyah!

We are talking about this in the hospital - I do not mind you calling me SharpSkinGirl, although it is not so true right now!

My name is coming from Dr. Marcel, who was at the camp in Bosnia. He was working at the Red Cross camp where I was born. My mother did not really want me because of the war and how she was getting pregnant, so she told Dr. Marcel he could give me a name. He called me "Yvette", after a girl he is knowing in medical school.

And that is why an Albanian girl is having the French name. :)

Doreen means "Gift." I just looked it up. But Mom named me after her Mom, so I guess you could say I'm named for my Grandma, she died before I was born though so I don't really know her. It also says the name is Irish, which makes sense, I guess. I mean, my Grandparents were Irish and my mom also has an Irish name.

Monkey Joe named himself. Well, he says him mom named him Monkey. He just thought Joe sounded cool so he added it on later.

A lot of people at my old school used to call me things like "Rodent" or "Vermin." So I don't like those words so much anymore, especially as names.

I don't mind when you call me SquirrelGirl though. Because I kind of am. And you're not mean about it at all.

I think my parents got Lillian from a great aunt or other distant relative I never met. It's too formal sounding to me which is why I prefer Lil. You can keep calling me DiamondLil though.

Well, my adopted parents gave me a name different than what my science project mom gave me.

Carmilla Maxine. And apparently Carmilla doesn't mean Caramel. Huh. Always wanted to say I was named after a candy. Not sure what Maxine means, but hey.

I call myself Cammie, I like the way it sounds better and it stops people from calling me Camilla by accident. On occasions I've had to sound tough I sometimes called myself Scorpion - which is a long story.

Then I have the name my bio-mom gave me, which I don't think I'll ever use.

And I finally get off the phone with my mom, who was like "why do you need to know why we named you Kyle, are you changing your name? You're not picking one of those mutant names we heard about on TV, are you?" and then I had to explain that I'm totally not changing my name because dude, I like my name.

and then I called my grandmom who just told me that my mom picked it out of a book of baby names and she liked it. But my middle name is my dad's name, which is kinda cool, since he's really my stepdad, even if he's the only dad I've known about.

xp_daytripper: (magic)
From: [personal profile] xp_daytripper
In magic, names are important. Magic users hardly ever use their 'real' names, because names are power to other magic users. It's the reason why, with people I care about, I tend to slide into nicknames; the part of me that's a magic user is trying to 'protect' them by using a name that isn't theirs. Not that there's actually danger - it's pretty much a magic user thing, but it's the way I was brought up. So I'm a bit like a cat that way - I tend to use my own name for people instead of their own, except if they ask me otherwise.

My name isn't the name I was given when I was born - my birth name was Gemile Szardos, but I got taken away from my family and that name got used against me by the man who had me: whenever he wanted to control me magically, he'd use my real name. Otherwise he'd call me "Blossom". Ugh.

When I got taken away from him and left at the hospital, I was given the name "Amanda Sefton" by Romany and that was the name I kept growing up. Even after finding my birth family again, I kept using Amanda, since that was the name I was used to. When my mother disowned me, I changed my name legally to Amanda Sefton - it's who I am, and who I'll always be.

Date: 2009-06-23 11:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] x-forge.livejournal.com
Just please tell me "Gemile" doesn't rhyme with "Emily" because otherwise I think you get to wear the Silly Name Hat for the day.

My parents chose a westernized name for me. Jubilation. In China it would be Lee Jubilation, which just sounds weird. But I've always gone by Jubilee except when people think they're funny, or have some sort of weird formality issue.

A quick search for it's meaning: a feeling of or the expression of joy or exultation.

I am Laurie Olivia Collins. Laurie as a name was originally a nickname for Laura and both are at origin Latin and are derivatives of Laurel, which means Tree in middle English.

Olivia is also Latin in origin and means olive tree.

COLLINS Surname Meaning & Origin:
1) A double diminutive of Nicholas (in England).
2) From cuilein, "darling," a term of endearment applied to young animals.
3) In the Welsh, Collen signifies hazel--a hazel-grove
4) The Gaelic version of the name COLLINS name is O' Coileáin, which means a young dog.

I just prefer Laurie though. :)

Marius: "From the god Mars," a warlike fellow, or, alternately, "manly." Bequeathed unto me in honour of my paternal grandfather, who was kind enough not to treat mum as the home-wrecking hussy she is.

Sammar: A name which means simultaneously "night conversation" in Arabic and reveals that mum secretly wanted a girl, a desire which I believe is conveyed by gifting me with what I am quite certain to be a traditionally feminine name. The only alternative is that she has not retained her Arabic nearly as well as she believes she has, and, like so many removed from her culture of origin, simply settled for one of sufficiently pleasing sound.

Cartier: "One who transports goods". Attributable to my father, presumably as additional incentive to remember his Responsibilities.

Laverne: Both serving to supply a meaning of "Dweller by an alder-tree" and ensure the alternation between male and female appellation continue to the bitter end.

Shockingly, I was off to a bit of a rough start in primary school.

I have a compound name. Marie-Ange is a combination of Marie, which is a variant of the name Mary and Ange, which is a shortened version of Angela or Angel. My middle name is Camille, which means altar server.

My mother is very religious, and I think she wanted to put as many references to religion into my name as possible. But I like my name, so I cannot complain too much. But if you want to keep using the name you have come up for me, that is also okay.

The name I was given by my mother before she gave me up was Kurt Wagner. I believe, from the way my father reacted when he learned this and my own research, that it was a small piece of revenge on her part.

My name may have been Wagner, but I grew up a Szardos in all but name. And now I am legally a Sefton, because the name Wagner meant nothing good to me and I wished to share my sister's name.

What is the name you have for me, out of curiosity?

Calliope was the Greek muse for epic poetry, and is most well known as being Homer's muse. So she inspired him to write the Illiad and the Odyssey.

But my mom didn't exactly name me after her. Instead, when I was born I was all pink and screaming and I was LOUD. And a calliope is a type of instrument made out of whistles, and it's really really loud. So I was a Calliope when I was born.

And Callie is a shorter version of that, which I like because Calliope can sound a bit long and old some times. I don't know.
